get ready

getting ready to go-- 2 weeks before aeroflot takes me to beirut by way of moscow. my community's gotten involved. you can see 3rd graders making peace flags here, a project that my mother designed, stitched together, and carried to brooklyn. i spoke to all 8 3rd classes about my trip this summer: what i'll be doing, who i'll be teaching, where i'll be going, what it might be like there, how important it is for kids there to know that someone out there remembers them, is thinking of them, and is sending love and peace.

the next day, those 200+ new york city schoolkids came and found my visiting mom and i. they took time out of their 20 daily minutes of outdoor play (!) to design peace flags. beautiful messages! سلام and 和平 and שלום and शान्ति and Мир and of course that little mercedes-benz symbol that triggered a lot of impromptu lessons in differentiating symbols of capitalism and peace :) i'll be carrying those flags with me when i hit the road... i promised the 3rd grade i would. and if all goes well, i'll be returning with flags from lebanon for the children of brooklyn.
